Gallery Talk: East Meets West: Paper from Belden to Noguchi with Fritzi Huber
February 15 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The art and craft of making paper by hand is now a global skill, but this hasn’t always been so. As this knowledge traveled throughout the globe changes in both fibers and technique occurred, offering a wide range of possibilities for paper’s use. CAM’s two exhibitions Unfolding Noguchi (on view through May 24, 2020) and The Eye Learns: Modernist Prints from the Louis Belden Collection (on view through April 26, 2020) offer examples from across the spectrum of paper in all of its versions, whether support for, or subject of the intended expression of the art. It is a major component for all of the works in the CAM’s current offerings.
Fritzi Huber is a hand papermaker with over 40 years of experience. She will discuss the wide range of papermaking techniques employed in the various works from the Belden collection, to the Akari forms of Isamu Noguchi, and address the possible hows and whys of choices made.
