New Hanover County Community Remembrance Project

The New Hanover County Community Remembrance Project will present a screening of “Just Mercy” Sunday, January 12, 4:30 pm at AMC Classic Wilmington 16, 11 Cinema Drive, followed by a panel discussion at 7pm. Panelists Dr. Kim Cook, UNCW Professor of Sociology and Criminology, Frankie Roberts, Executive Direcotr at UNC, and Lettie Shumate, Historian and Racial Justice advocate, will speak on the work of the Equal Justice Iniative (EJI), injustices in our criminal justice system and the New Hanover County Community Remembrance Project (NHCCRP), a coalition of groups and citizens of the Wilmington community working to memorialize victims of the race massacre that occurred during the coup d’etat in Wilmington in 1898. Its work is to provide truth about what led to the massacre and the historical and ongoing damage done to the African American communityas a result of this event.
